These pictures were painted with traditional Vietnamese technique of lacquer painting: "son mai". The foundation for lacquer painting is constructed from wood with several coats of lacquer to provide strength and ensure a flat base. In addition, the lacquer artist may also use egg and river shells, gold and silver leaf, all of which can be applied as larger pieces or in a powdered form. The surface is polished firstly with human hair and then with the fingers or palm of the hand, using a low abrasive powdered charcoal.
